I appreciate your kind words. It always encourages me to hear of churches using the 1689 Confession, as it is a fine tool to help us grow in Christ.
I was not clear on your meaning in the last sentence. Are you asking if I could finish my posts on chapter 9? If so, I will try and finish chapter 9 (three more sections) this week and get it posted. If that is not what you meant, please let me know.

Just out of curiousity What state or country is your church located?

May God richly bless you and your congregation!

Subject: 1677/1689 Second London Baptist Confession Chapter 3, paragraph 3: Reconciliation of Elect Angels
Tyrell,
You asked this question quite some time ago, but here is what I have found to date:

I asked Rob Cosby, an elder and church planter at our church, about this phrasing in the 1689 regarding the reconciliation of elect angels through Christ. He took a 1677/1689 Confession class at IRBS in Escondido with Dr. Jim Renihan, and he provided me with his notes. I filled out the notes a bit and when I quote his exact notes I placed them in quotation marks.
“Does Christ’s work mediate for Angels?”

A. Rob had states this in his notes: “(1) Coxe – analogical reconciliation – confirmed in grace”
I found an article at IRBS in Escondido on this analogical reconciliation of elect angels:
http://www.reformedbaptistinstitute.org/?p=544 This is helpful and here we see some quotes from Coxe’s writing which addressed a controversy during that time related to elect angels. Coxe was instrumental, along with Collins, in framing the 1689/1677 Confession.

B. The phrase “through Jesus Christ” is from the 1644 FLBC, although angels are not mentioned. This may be significant because that phrase is absent in the Westminster Confession or the Savoy Declaration.

C. This passage in Col. 1:20 seems at first like it might support this idea of all things being reconciled in Christ: “and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. Col 1:20 (ESV) .
Rob Cosby has this in his notes from Prof. Renihan’s class: “Question: does Col 1:20 refer to “angels” or is it the saints that have preceded us, or a hendiadys for “all creation””.

Note: "Hendiadys" means: a literary device expressing an idea by means of two words linked by "and," instead of a grammatically more complex form such as an adverb qualifying an adjective. Everyday examples of hendiadys are the expressions "nice and soft," rather than "nicely soft," and "good and tight." (This definition is from Word 2003 dictionary).
But then this note follows for Col. 1:20: “ No, it is not specifically angels. Note the context of Col 1:20,”

Hope this is of some help.

Hi David,
Thank you for doing so; that is humbling and encouraging.
Our presbyterian brothers can prehaps feel at home with the use of Sproul, Hodge and others I have quoted throughout. The students may also appreciate that I have shown in each and every paragraph using Bold, underline and italics with footnotes where the 1689 Confession varies from the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Savoy Declaration and the source of that change if known. I used Dr. Jim Renihan's (IRBS Dean out of Wesminster Seminary California) work True Confessions as my source.
The Lord Bless your ministry at the seminary.

My pleasure.

I am sharing your blog with select students at the seminary I am on staff at:
http://www.tnars.net/ (The North American Reformed Seminary).

We adhere to the Westminster Standards, however happily accept RB'ers (as I am one) by simply articulating any differences, ie- Baptism, etc.

I believe this will be a rich source of study material for many.
